Top Tips for Managers
by Sharon M. Gazda
President, Edizen
- Mix up your communication. Walk down the hall, greet someone with a smile, or
have a chat. Sometimes human contact really does beat email.
- Take the high road. When employee conflict starts, don’t try to be right
and don’t take it personally. Find solutions rather than agreement.
- Respect your staff. Make sure to let them know that what they do matters.
- Remember your manners. A thank you now and then goes a long way.
- Reject the notion that everyone has to be a superstar. Good hard working people
who also want a life outside of work are invaluable.
- Prioritize your time each day. Don’t get sucked into doing things that
others are capable of doing better than you.
- Commit one hour each day to think. Read a book, take a walk, meditate – do
what ever it takes to rest your brain. Thinking requires energy. Make sure your brain
gets a daily recharge.
- Remember – you are unique but not irreplaceable. A little humility will serve
you well. Don’t be afraid to ask your team, "How can I be a better manager?"
- Spend time with people to form a relationship. Take individuals on your staff out
to lunch or to coffee or go to their space for a quick conversation. You’ll be
amazed what you learn when you ask, "What’s going on with you?" Sit
back and really listen.
