Guidelines for an Effective Conversation With
a Derailing Employee:
- Set an informal, casual tone
- Maintain a professional demeanor
- Make it all about them
- Let them know you have always viewed them as a high potential and why
- Share your concern that you have sensed a change recently
- Keep questions open-ended
- Listen attentively
- Validate where the employee is in that moment
- Inquire if the work they are doing is interesting and challenging
- Determine if any roadblocks are preventing the employee from re-engaging
